Design Patterns for Software Engineering

[ad_1] IntroductionDesign patterns are a relatively new concept in software engineering, and have their origins in civil engineering. Essentially they are a blueprint for solving a specific problem, allowing the benefits of an optimal solution to be carried forward to new implementations. The application of design patterns to the domain of software engineering was first formalised in the book "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software" by Eric Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides, in 1995. The book selected 23 patterns considered to be core to understanding the pattern approach in solving software engineering problems. While this book also set out many principles, it did not make a general template for pattern use available to the wider audience. Subsequently, applying patterns has not yet itself become a pattern-driven exercise. Engineers are...

Graphic Design: Degree Or No Degree?

[ad_1] Throughout my design career I have came across many job adverts for a graphic designer 'with a degree'. It always made me feel a little frustrated - "If I don't have a degree do you automatically assume I won't be good enough to join your company?". Surely a designer's portfolio and/or experience should say more than a piece of paper with a qualification on it.I studied for a higher national diploma in graphic design at college and when the course finished I had the chance of pursuing a degree in graphic design or go for an advanced diploma in art and design. One of my lecturers told me that the degree contained more theory work whereas the advanced diploma was more practical. I opted for the practical work... after all...

Ditch the Desktop and Go Mobile!

[ad_1] My mobile productivity dream is nearing a reality. I don't want to have a desktop at the office, a laptop for client presentations, and a mobile device for when I am out and about. I want a single mobile device that I take everywhere and sync with productivity peripherals (read monitors, keyboard, and mouse) when required. As well, there is more than enough processing power in our smartphones for everyday tasks such as email, web browsing, and document creation. My desire is to be able to do all of this wirelessly. That isn't quite ready today - but MHL is. To pull this off using MHL there is one cable involved - but there is actual a silver lining in there. But before we get into that what in the...

Lessons Learned From an Entrepreneurial Upbringing

[ad_1] When I was growing up, my sisters and I had the advantage of being surrounded by entrepreneurial parents. When I think about it, there were many positives to this type of exposure and it really helped to form not only our activities in life, but our personalities.Although all my other sisters chose not to pursue the entrepreneurial path, I know they agree with me that the skills, attitudes and behaviours learned from this upbringing helped them to become successful in their careers and other pursuits.People that haven't grown up in an entrepreneurial household often assume this environment is more challenging for children and that family time was harder to find. This wasn't true for us or for other entrepreneurial families that we knew.Even during the times that my parents were away:...
