Evolution of Website Development
In August 1991, the first website came into existence with authorship of Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of “World Wide Web”. Thus Berners-Lee became the first person to combine the Internet communication with hypertext. Erstwhile, hypertext was only meant for sharing scientific documents of various researches to be kept with browsing information on a single computer. And the Internet was a mere career of user input like email and news postings in public forum. Yet in that period of dawn of Internet client – server architecture of information sharing was envisaged.
Today, web development is a collaborative effort between departments. It involves developing sites for accessing World Wide Web via the Internet or a private network via an intranet. The process of developing a site includes any or all of the followings in a given period of time:
- Web design,
- Web content development,
- Client liaison,
- Client-side/ server-side scripting,
- Web server and Network security configuration, and
- E-commerce development.
However, professionals usually exclude aspects of site design from the concept of development of sites and keep the idea confined to writing markup and coding.
From middle of 1990s to 2005, the cost of development and hosting sites has fallen drastically. Smaller companies, side by side the larger ones, have been enabled to build them for smaller companies as well as for individuals. Such increase in quantity of production has further escalated the growth of the industry.
On the other hand, the reason behind massive growth of the industry lies in availability of free of cost tools and platforms. For example, the LAMP -Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP – all are distributed free of cost. Among other factors, one is the rapid onset and quick market foray of easy to use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) softwares such as WebDev, Adobe Dreamweaver, Net beans and Microsoft Expression Studio. These softwares have enabled all interested ones in developing pages in a site.
Tools of next generation have been achieved by using the strong growth in LAMP, Java Platform, Enterprise Edition technologies and Microsoft.NET technologies. It helped to run applications online. Erstwhile it was available only on desk based computers. All these are free of constraints of specific environments.
The evolution of web development has transformed the medium of commerce into one for communication and socializing. Thus it is now influencing all of business, communication and social interactions.
